ORAFEC-09 Machine to Reduce The Proliferation of Counterfeit Parts

San Clemente, June 9, 2009 – 4 Star Electronics, Inc., one of the world leaders in supplying obsolete electronic components added the ORAFEC-09 (Organization Against Fraudulant Electronic Components) counterfeit detection machine to its arsenal of quality control processes. This will give their Quality Control department one more tool in the fight against the proliferation of counterfeit components. Counterfeit parts are a big problem that is only getting larger. The ORAFEC-09 helps quality control teams identify counterfeit and sub-standard components in a fast and user-friendly way.

The ORAFEC-09 works by performing a scan of a known good part, it then applies electrical signals to a electronic component's pins, or a subset thereof. By recording the electrical characteristics of those pins, the device forms what is called a PinPrint, a record of the scan. The PinPrint is then used to compare a known genuine component to a suspect one. When configuring a scan, the parameters which can be adjusted include the voltage range, low and high peak voltage, source resistance, and the frequency.

The last 5 years has seen a huge spike in counterfeit components. 8% of IC's traded were deemed counterfeit with a monetary loss of up to $6 Billion in sales according to www.orafec.org. This level of quality assurance is not only good for a businesses bottomline, but it is especially beneficial in the area of safety since many of the parts that are distributed in the electronics industry are used in a variety of medical, military and aerospace applications.
